On 26 September 1951, at the Rome Congress of Romance Language Psychoanalysts, Lacan delivered a paper entitled "Fonction et champ de la parole et du langage en psychanalyse" ("The Function and Field of Speech and Language in Psychoanalysis") -- subsequently known as "Discours de Rome" ("The Rome Discourse").[1]
In September 1953, the sixteenth Conférence des psychanalystes de langues romanes took place and, at the end of the SPP meeting, Lacan presented to the members of his new society, the Société française de psychanalyse, his "Discours de Rome" on the function of language in psychoanalysis.
